LGBT CSA, GLASS, GLOBE Celebrate National Coming Out Day

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Congressional Staff Association (CSA) released the following statement in celebration of National Coming Out Day. The LGBT CSA was joined by the Senate GLASS Caucus and LC-GLOBE.

“20 years ago, few congressional staff could be out at work or in public,” said Todd Sloves, President of the LGBT Congressional Staff Association. “Today, more than 70 staff gathered on the Capitol Steps to show that has changed. We want to show that you can be out, proud, and work for the institution that directs the policy of our nation. We hope this show of pride and solidarity continues to change hearts and minds so that more may join us on the steps in years to come.”

“Increasing visibility and representation on Capitol Hill sends an important message to all LGBTQ Americans,” said Caitlin Hart and Andrew Shine, co-chairs of the Senate GLASS Caucus, the LGBTQ Staff Association for the U.S. Senate. “As we celebrate the 29th annual National Coming Out Day, GLASS is proud to promote professional development and social engagement for LGBTQ Senate staff and allies. We will continue striving to make the United States Senate a more welcoming and inclusive place for all staff and to raise awareness of issues impacting the entire LGBTQ community.”

“Coming out is something LGBTQ+ individuals will do throughout the course of their lives…and events like Pride and Coming Out Day remind us that we are not alone in the challenges we face as we strive for equality. This is why employee organizations like GLOBE, GLASS, and the LGBT CSA are so important. We need to provide that support and foster a climate of equality.” –Meg Metcalf, LC-GLOBE
